Sudden Impact is a reprinting of Some Kind of Hero. Though most of the plotline remains the same, some changes have been made. In the 2005 version, the boys’ names are changed from Rick and Alan to Jason and Kurt. Also, whereas the love triangle between Tina, Rick, and Alan is central to the developing relationships in Some Kind of Hero, in Sudden Impact, Tina and Kurt are best friends, and Tina dislikes Jason. Jason is portrayed as an overbearing, spoiled, yet popular teenage boy. In this version, Tina does not convince Jason to donate his blood; rather, Jason is killed after drinking and riding his motorcycle without a helmet. Sudden Impact is a young adult realist fiction novel, and is told from the first-person, immediate engaging perspective of Tina.
“Coach Kenner yelled at me to get off the field. He and Jason both came chasing after me. They thought I lost my mind. A kid falls down in a soccer game, big deal. But I knew better.” (14)
