Michael was sixteen when he was falsely accused of murdering his girlfriend, Lisa. To the jury, Michael was a bad guy dating a good girl. He was into drugs and sex, and there were no other suspects, so Michael was convicted. However, six months into his sentence the real killer confesses, and Michael is released. The story picks up after Michael's release from prison and chronicles his struggle to become part of a society that rejected him. The Book of Michael is a young adult, realist fiction novel, and is a first-person, distant-engaging narrative.
"And then, after all of the agony, the trial came to an end. And the jury found me guilty. There were no other suspects. The prosecutor's words. No one else could have possibly done this. The jury's vote was unanimous. And at that moment which I had already prepared myself for, all I could think about was Lisa. How much I loved her and how much I wanted her back." (68)
